In Pivotal Tracker, two distinguishing features of a story of type “release” is that 1. it can’t have points, even if the “allow chores and bugs to have points” option is enabled, and 2. it can have a date associated with it. If a release with a date associated with it is scheduled in the backlog, and that date is after the end date of the sprint it is currently scheduled in, the release is styled with a red color to visually indicate it is currently expected to miss its deadline.
In LiteTracker, currently, a release has no difference in the fields presented in the UI:

I’d actually be in favor of (an option to allow) adding points to releases, since in my “personal tasks” usage I tend to use releases for things like people’s birthdays, and it feels redundant to have a single story for “send so-and-so a birthday message” (to put a point estimate on and contribute to future velocity calculations) and a release “so-and-so’s birthday” (to have a date associated with it that shows up in the backlog), but I do need to be able to associate a date with a release.
